Harald V, the King of Norway, has died at the age of 89.

He served as King since 1991.

Harald succeeded to the Norwegian throne following the death of his father on January 17, 1991.

Last week, he was admitted to hospital with fluid retention caused by cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia. The palace said his condition had worsened on August 24.

By Thursday, the palace announced that his condition had become "extremely serious", and he died at Oslo University Hospital.
