Keeping an eye on Hurricane Fiona

It appears increasingly likely that Hurricane Fiona will have an impact on Newfoundland and Labrador. There is still a bit of a question as to where.

Compared to Monday the storm looks like it will track farther west impacting western Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia and parts of Prince Edward Island the hardest.

By the time the storm reaches Canadian territory, it could be a category 2 storm.

At this time it looks like the strongest winds will occur over western Newfoundland. In these areas, we could see winds gusting over 130 km/h.

Heavy rain is also expected. The heavy rain will likely fall over the areas seeing the strongest winds. In some areas 100 mm of rain is possible.

It remains too early to provide specifics and a slight shift in the track will significantly alter the forecast.

There will likely be significant disruptions to travel.

This morning Fiona has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h with higher gusts. Fiona is a category 3 hurricane. Strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days.

It is a good idea to have an emergency kit ready.
