Hurricane Larry Update


Hurricane Larry is almost set to barrel across eastern Newfoundland. Winds are expected to gust between 130 km/h and 160 km/h over some areas on the Avalon.


Rainfall is forecast in the 30 mm range though heavy downpours are likely.


Large waves and pounding surf are expected along south-facing coastlines during tonight’s high tide. There is potential for damage to coastal infrastructure from storm surge.



Weather advisories include:

  • Hurricane warning for St. John’s and vicinity, Avalon Peninsula North, Avalon Peninsula Southeast, Avalon Peninsula Southwest

  • Tropical storm warning for Bonavista Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, Connaigre, Clarenville, Terra Nova and vicinity.

  • Wind warning for St. John’s and vicinity, Avalon Peninsula North, Avalon Peninsula Southeast, Avalon Peninsula Southwest, Bonavista Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, Clarenville, Terra Nova and vicinity, Connaigre

  • Storm surge warning for Avalon Peninsula Southeast, Avalon Peninsula Southwest, Burin Peninsula, Connaigre

Flights


Several arriving and departing flights from the St. John's International Airport have been cancelled.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled the following crossings:

  • North Sydney to Port aux Basques Friday, September 10, 2021 at 5:45 pm

  • Port aux Basques to North Sydney Friday, September 10, 2021 at 11:45 pm

  • North Sydney to Port aux Basques Friday, September 10, 2021 at 11:15 pm

  • Port aux Basques to North Sydney Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 6:30 am


Utilities


Both Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro announced today that their teams are ready to respond should the need arise.
