The provincial government has formally withdrawn from an agreement exploring the creation of a National Marine Conservation Area on Newfoundland’s south coast, a move that raises questions about the province’s commitment to long-term environmental protection.

Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Chris Tibbs announced the termination of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) tied to a federal feasibility assessment for the proposed marine conservation area, as well as the potential redesignation of Sandbanks Provincial Park as a national park.

The decision effectively halts discussions involving Parks Canada, Miawpukek First Nation, Qalipu First Nation and the Town of Burgeo. All signatories have been formally notified, according to the province.

The MOU was intended to assess feasibility rather than commit to the creation of a protected area.

The federal government and other signatories have not yet responded to the province’s decision.
