Trade dispute deepens after Canada "attacked" by tariffs

After trade talks collapsed on Saturday between Canada and the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump slapped a 50 percent tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar.

Trump posted to his Truth Social network, "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!! President DJT."

On this side of the border, there was almost complete unity. Premier Tony Wakeham said that this province stands firmly with Team Canada. Wakeham added, "Prime Minister Mark Carney has my full support as we maintain a united Team Canada approach. Newfoundland and Labrador stands ready to do its part."
