The first round of funding has been announced under the Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program, supporting dozens of communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Approximately $2.26 million has been awarded to 58 communities to help develop wildfire resiliency plans and carry out local prevention and mitigation projects aimed at reducing wildfire risk and protecting homes, infrastructure and the environment.

Applications were reviewed by the Newfoundland and Labrador FireSmart Committee, with a technical sub-committee assessing submissions. Funding decisions were based on eligibility, the quality of applications, and the potential impact of proposed projects in reducing wildfire risk.

The program focuses on a community-based approach to wildfire resilience, supporting local risk assessments, fuel management planning and mitigation efforts. It also aims to improve emergency preparedness by providing guidance to property owners on how to better protect their homes from wildfires.

The initiative is backed by a $12.8-million joint investment from the federal and provincial governments through Natural Resources Canada’s Resilient Communities through FireSmart program.
