Energy NL is welcoming the new agreement between the governments of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec on the development of the Churchill Falls and Gull Island hydroelectric projects.
The organization said the massive energy development will create significant opportunities for companies across Newfoundland and Labrador’s energy sector while providing additional clean electricity for industrial and domestic use.
Energy NL Chair Brad Forsey said the organization’s members have extensive experience developing large-scale energy projects, including hydroelectric developments in the province.
“Our members are leaders in energy project development,” Forsey said, noting that local companies can contribute to everything from engineering and fabrication to construction, materials supply and facility operations.
Energy NL said its members are prepared to play a major role in the development of the Upper Churchill projects and work with local businesses and communities to ensure industrial benefits are spread throughout the province.
The agreement, completed this month by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec, includes new generation facilities, transmission lines and an adjacent wind project.
It will also provide additional electricity to Newfoundland and Labrador and allow the province to transmit power through Quebec for export to the United States.
Energy NL CEO Charlene Johnson said the organization’s members are eager to begin preparing for the work ahead.
“With a new MOU in place for this generational energy project, Energy NL members are excited for the opportunities ahead, and frankly, to get to work,” Johnson said.
She said Energy NL already has positive relationships with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec, including through supplier development sessions related to the Upper Churchill hydroelectric developments.
Johnson said the organization’s next steps will be to prepare its members for the work, ensure they are fully engaged in the project and provide opportunities for them to participate in the developments.
Energy NL said it will build on its existing relationships with the two utilities as the projects move forward.
