Driver’s licence photo renewals now available online through MyGovNL

Newfoundland and Labrador residents can now renew their driver’s licence photo online through MyGovNL, eliminating the need to visit a government office for the process.

The Provincial Government says more than 425,000 people are registered with MyGovNL, which provides access to a range of government services.

Residents will receive a reminder 90 days before their driver’s licence photo expires, with information on how to complete the renewal online.

The new service allows residents to use a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera to submit a new photo. MyGovNL provides a checklist covering requirements such as lighting, facial position and expression, as well as restrictions on accessories including hats and glasses.

A real-time verification process confirms the photo was taken at the time of submission and matches the driver’s existing photo on file with Motor Registration.

All submitted photos will continue to be reviewed by Motor Registration staff before a renewed licence is issued.

New licences are expected to arrive by registered mail within seven to 10 business days at the address on file.

The government says the online service eliminates the need to book an appointment, travel to a government office or wait in line to renew a photo.

Residents who prefer to complete the process in person can continue to access driver licensing services at Motor Registration Offices and Government Service Centres across the province. Appointments can still be booked online or by phone, and Senior Wednesdays will continue.

Government Services Minister Lloyd Parrott says the new service provides residents with greater flexibility.

“This new online service gives residents the flexibility to renew their driver’s licence photo whenever it works best for them, whether that’s from the comfort of their own home, at work, or anywhere in between.”

The government says the service is part of its broader effort to reduce red tape and make government services more accessible.
