Construction on a new section of the Crosstown Shared-Use Path in St. John's is set to begin next week, with work expected to continue through the end of the year.

The City of St. John's said construction on the section between Canada Drive and Waterford Bridge Road will begin Monday, Aug. 3, and is scheduled to continue until December 2026.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect traffic delays, lane reductions and sidewalk closures in the construction zone while work is underway.

The project will require the removal of some trees and shrubs along the route. The city said new trees and shrubs will be planted as part of the project, with an arborist overseeing landscape planning, removals, replanting, transplanting and tree protection to ensure work follows industry best practices.

City officials said the project was shaped by public engagement that began in 2023. Feedback helped guide key design features, including the route alignment, surface materials, trailheads, rest areas, lighting, crosswalks, traffic signals and wayfinding signage.

The shared-use path is designed to provide an accessible route for people of all ages and abilities. The paved pathway will accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, people using wheelchairs and mobility devices, and those pushing strollers.

The Crosstown Shared-Use Path is part of the city's active transportation strategy outlined in its Our City, Our Future strategic plan. The city said it is also advancing several other shared-use path projects aimed at improving connectivity and supporting safe, multi-modal transportation throughout St. John's.

The City of St. John's said it will provide updates on traffic impacts and construction progress as the project moves forward.
