A ceremony is set to take place in St. John’s today to mark the National Day of Mourning, an annual observance honouring workers who have been killed, injured or made ill on the job.
Organized by the St. John’s and District Labour Council, the event will be held at the Emera Innovation Exchange at Signal Hill Campus, located at 100 Signal Hill Rd., beginning at 11:45 a.m.
The National Day of Mourning is observed each year across Canada to remember those affected by workplace incidents. The day also serves as a call to action, encouraging governments, employers and workers to strengthen efforts around occupational health and safety.
The observance is both a time of reflection and a reminder of the importance of preventing workplace accidents, injuries and illnesses, while recognizing the impact such events have on workers, families and communities.
