Prime Minister Mark Carney wrapped up a visit to New York City on Wednesday aimed at promoting Canada as a top destination for global investment.
During the trip, Carney met with investors, chief executives, entrepreneurs and business leaders as part of the federal government’s push to attract major investment into Canada’s economy.
The Prime Minister also delivered remarks and took part in a featured discussion at the Economic Club of New York, where he outlined the government’s economic strategy focused on strengthening Canada’s economy at home while expanding partnerships abroad, including with the United States.
According to the federal government, Canada is working to catalyse $1 trillion in investment over the next five years in sectors including energy, transportation, data infrastructure and defence.
In a statement, Carney said Canada is positioned to attract new investment because of its natural resources, skilled workforce and trade access.
“Canada has what the world wants,” Carney said. “We’re an energy superpower with access to 1.5 billion consumers around the world through our free trade agreements.”
The government said approximately $280 billion in federal capital investments and incentives over five years are expected to help generate more than $1 trillion in total investment from public, private and institutional partners.
Ottawa also pointed to Canada’s economic stability, noting the country holds a AAA credit rating, has the lowest net debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7 and is home to seven of the world’s 50 safest banks.
The federal government said Canada was ranked the world’s most attractive market for infrastructure investment earlier this month by the Global Infrastructure Investor Association.
Officials also highlighted Canada’s artificial intelligence sector, growing quantum technology industry and network of 16 free trade agreements covering 51 countries as key advantages in attracting global investors.
