Black bear activity reported near Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd’s Cove

Provincial officials are monitoring reports of black bear activity near the Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd’s Cove.
The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands says residents and visitors should take precautions to avoid attracting bears to the area.
Sightings can be reported to the Lewisporte Forest Management District Office at 709-541-0214.
Officials recommend keeping garbage properly stored and waiting until the designated collection day before putting it outside. Fallen fruit should also be removed from the ground, and residents are advised not to leave food out for wildlife or birds.
People are also encouraged to avoid putting meat, bones, fish, oil, grease, dairy products, eggshells, garbage or large amounts of fruit in compost bins.
Outdoor cooking appliances and utensils should be kept clean. Pet owners in areas where bears have been sighted are advised to keep animals indoors or under close supervision.
Officials warn that wild animals can be dangerous and unpredictable when approached.
If a bear has not seen a person, people should quietly back away and leave the area while keeping an eye on the animal. They should try to remain downwind and never get between a bear and its cubs.
If a bear has seen or smelled a person, officials advise staying calm, avoiding direct eye contact and giving the animal plenty of space and a clear route to leave.
People should back away slowly and never run. If speaking is necessary, they should use a calm and firm voice.
