Alerts in effect for heavy snow across parts of Newfoundland


A powerful storm will bring heavy snow to parts of Newfoundland.


There is a winter storm warning in effect for the northern Avalon Peninsula, including St. John's and vicinity. This area will see the most snow with 50 to 80 cm expected from this afternoon to Saturday morning.


On the Burin Peninsula and southern Avalon Peninsula, 30 to 50 cm is expected, except lesser amounts over southern sections. Total ice pellet accumulations: 10 to 15 cm, mainly over southern sections. Potential freezing rain duration of 4 to 8 hours, mainly over extreme southern sections.


For the Channel-Port aux to Burgeo to Ramea, total snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm is expected from this morning until early Friday morning.


Clarenville, Terra Nova, and the Bonavista Peninsula will see 30 to 45 cm while the Bay d'Espoir Highway area will see 20 cm.
