Storm Surge Expected along North & Northeast Coasts #nlwx

Storm surge and large waves are expected along the north and northeast coast of Newfoundland today.

Storm surge warnings have been issued for Avalon Peninsula North, Bonavista Peninsula, St. John's and vicinity, and Terra Nova. High waves combined with high water levels and pounding surf combined with a higher run of tides will result in storm surge.

There are also special weather statements in effect for the Bay of Exploits, Bonavista North, and Clarenville and vicinity. In these areas, large waves, pounding surf, and elevated sea water levels are expected this morning.

What is storm surge?

Storm surge is the abnormal rise in seawater level during a storm, it measured as the height of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide. The surge is caused primarily by a storm's winds pushing water onshore.

In this case the storm in question is several hundred kilometres east of St. John's.
