Federal Government Considering Ban on Conversion Therapy

The federal government is considering a ban on conversion therapy.

Conversion therapy is the practice of trying to change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual using psychological or spiritual interventions.

Various jurisdictions in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas have passed laws against conversion therapy.

Edmonton-Centre MP Liberal Randy Boissonnault said that his government wants to ban the practice and said anyone who doesn't comply could serve jail time and fines.

Conversion therapy is widely discredited.

Boissonnault said the federal justice department will examine the issue over the summer.
