The provincial and federal government has awarded a $1.67 million contract to Redwood Construction to build 10 micro homes on Army Street in St. John’s.
The homes were designed to support people experiencing homelessness by providing safe, affordable housing. Each micro home will be about 500 square feet, smaller than a typical apartment.
The project includes two buildings — one with six studio-style units and another with four. Two of the 10 homes will be fully accessible, and all units will feature universal design elements.
Funding for the project was provided through the federal government’s Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampments Initiative, which supports projects aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness.
The site, located in the Buckmaster’s Circle neighbourhood, is on land owned by the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.
The provincial government has set a target of building 10,000 new homes over five years. The plan includes working with municipalities to reduce red tape, exploring modular construction, expanding affordable housing options for seniors and repairing or replacing uninhabitable NLHC units.
