The provincial government recognized outstanding water and wastewater professionals during its annual Water and Wastewater Workshop in Gander, presenting the 2026 Operator of the Year Awards.

Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Chris Tibbs announced the recipients, highlighting the critical role operators play in maintaining safe and reliable water systems across the province.

Derrick Seward of the Town of Hants Harbour received the Small Operator of the Year Award for his work in monitoring, evaluating and improving the community’s water system to ensure it meets high operational standards.

Philip Genneaux of the Town of Port Saunders was named Operator of the Year, recognized for 23 years of service and leadership. His efforts during a 2024 state of emergency were noted as instrumental in protecting and restoring essential water services.

The awards are based on criteria including certification achievements, participation in training and education, leadership, support for colleagues and contributions to their communities. Municipalities across the province were invited to submit nominations.

The annual workshop brings together between 250 and 300 participants, including system operators, municipal leaders and industry experts. It offers technical sessions on water and wastewater system operation and maintenance, along with a trade show featuring equipment and technologies used in distribution and treatment.

The event also provides opportunities for hands-on training and knowledge sharing among peers in the sector.
