Newfoundland and Labrador residents will receive additional help with electricity and home heating costs this winter, with the provincial government announcing $54 million in affordability measures.

Starting in January 2027, residential customers of Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro will receive a 15 per cent reduction on their electricity bills. The rebate is expected to save the average household about $351 a year.

The government is accelerating the Churchill Falls Electricity Rebate, which was originally dependent on a finalized Churchill Falls agreement. Premier Tony Wakeham says the province is moving ahead now rather than making residents wait for the deal to be finalized.

The province is also doubling the maximum Home Heating Supplement for 2026 from $500 to $1,000 for eligible households that rely on furnace or stove oil.

Residents who have already applied for the heating supplement will not need to submit another application to receive the additional support.
