Virtual Public Conference on Cancer to be held on October 15
Memorial University Professor Sevtap Savas is hosting a virtual Public Conference on Cancer on October 15. This is a one day conference with more than 15 speakers.
The conference will focus on patient perspectives, cancer screenings services available to residents of the province, support services available to cancer patients and families, and the importance of collaborating with cancer patients and members of the general public.
According to a Canadian Cancer Statistics report, Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest cancer rates among all Canadian provinces with about 4,000 people being diagnosed with cancer every year. About 1,600 die because of cancer.
Savas says that "the most common cancers diagnosed in Newfoundland and Labrador are lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer. They form almost half of all cancers diagnosed here."
On a national scale, almost one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives.
Registration to the conference is free, but attendees are required to register at https://www.med.mun.ca/oped/programs/4534.
