Firefighters with the Portugal Cove-St. Philip's fire department received a call just before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday for a report of a vehicle that had went over a cliff on Beachy Cove Road in the area of the Bell Island Ferry terminal.

Firefighters then requested assistance from the St. John’s Regional Fire Departments High Angle rescue team to help them extract the injured people from their vehicle.

The two occupants of the vehicle were freed and then placed on to a rescue basket which was attached to a pulley system and then brought to the top of the embankment were they were placed on a stretcher and sent to hospital.

A witness who watched the crash said he was

“the first one down the bank to check on the people while others came to help him”.

The road between W Point Road and Wharf Road was closed for some time as crews worked to remove the occupants from the vehicle and investigate the collision.

It is unknown what the cause of the collision is or what the extent of the injuries are at this time.
