Two people are dead and two others were injured following a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Clarenville.

Clarenville and Whitbourne RCMP responded to the crash around 11:45 a.m. Friday, August 14, near Jack’s Pond, just east of the Southern Harbour exit.

RCMP Traffic Services East, the Southern Harbour Volunteer Fire Department and paramedics also responded.

Police say a 75-year-old man and his 78-year-old female passenger, who were travelling in a sport utility vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a pickup truck and his passenger were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, although police say the passenger suffered more serious injuries that are considered potentially life-altering.

A collision reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also been engaged.

The collision forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway for several hours while police investigated.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

RCMP say no further details are being released at this time out of respect for those involved and their families.
