Two moose found shot and abandoned near Humber Arm South

The Resource Enforcement Division is asking the public for information after two moose were found shot and abandoned near Humber Arm South.

Officers with the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands responded to two separate complaints in the Snooks Pond area on the south shore of the Bay of Islands over the past week.

Two full moose carcasses were found at separate locations. Officers say both animals appear to have been shot and left behind.

The incidents are believed to have occurred between September 12 and September 20.

Poaching is an offence under the provincial Wild Life Act. Penalties for poaching a big game animal start at $2,000 and can reach $25,000 for a first offence. Offenders may also face one to six months in prison and, in most cases, forfeiture of firearms and vehicles involved in the offence.

It is also illegal to intentionally allow wildlife taken or killed for food to be destroyed, wasted or spoiled. Intentional wastage of meat carries a fine of at least $500 and up to $25,000, with up to three months' imprisonment for failure to pay.
