Severe weather to be long-lasting across Newfoundland


Weather alerts remain in effect and there are several closures as a storm impacts eastern and central sections of Newfoundland.


Across the northern Avalon Peninsula including St. John's and northeastern Newfoundland to the Bay of Exploits will see about 40 to 60 cm of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. Maximum wind gusts will reach 90 to 100 km/h along parts of the coast. This storm will continue until Friday morning.


For the Connaigre area, 15 to 25 cm of snow is expected. The Burin Peninsula will see 30 to 45 cm and the Southern Avalon Peninsula could see 20 to 30 cm. Winds will gust from 80 km/h, except 100 near Cape Race. This severe weather will continue until Thursday evening.


A storm surge warning is in effect from Cape Spear to Deadman's Bay. Waves of 5 to 7 metres are expected overnight.
