The Newfoundland and Labrador government has issued a new Request for Proposals to acquire two bird dog aircraft to support wildfire suppression operations.

The aircraft would help coordinate aerial firefighting, improve safety around wildfires and provide support to ground crews. Each aircraft would be staffed by a pilot and an air attack officer trained in fire behaviour and air traffic control.

Bird dog aircraft perform three main functions: managing air traffic around wildfires, directing aerial suppression efforts and monitoring conditions for ground crews when necessary.

The aircraft would also be used to transport crews and equipment to airports and airstrips throughout the province.

The new tender replaces a previous call for proposals and broadens the eligible aircraft criteria in an effort to attract more bidders and identify suitable, cost-effective options.

Bids are being accepted through November 20, 2026. Details are available through the government's procurement notice on MERX.
