Pope Francis arrived for his Canadian trip on Sunday.

Francis will use the visit to meet the indigenous peoples and hopes that his, "penitential pilgrimage" will contribute to reconciliation.

The flight carrying the pope landed at the Edmonton International Airport. Those greeting the pope included Governor General Mary Simon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Salma Lakhani.

His first public encounters begin on Monday morning. The pontiff will also visit Quebec City and Iqaluit.

The 85-year-old, was in a wheelchair when he disembarked from the plane.
