Pope Leo XIV has undergone successful thoracic surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after tests indicated lung adenocarcinoma.

The procedure was performed as scheduled and lasted approximately 90 minutes, with the Pope spending about three hours in the operating theatre.

An intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, which had been suspected based on pre-operative tests.

The operation was successful, with no complications reported. The Pope woke up normally following surgery and returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor after a brief period of observation.
