Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department were called to Penetanguishene Road at 9:23 p.m. on February 4 for reports of a residential structure fire.

A short time after firefighters arrived, the front window broke, shooting flames out the window, then up the side of the home, causing it to spread into the upstairs.

Firefighters contained the blaze a short time later. One person, who is believed to be the lone occupant of the home, was taken to hospital by Newfoundland Health Services paramedics for observation. The person was uninjured.

Airport Heights Drive in the area of Penetanguishene Road was closed for some time as crews worked to extinguish the fire.

The home sustained fire damage along with significant smoke and water damage.
