Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador called on the provincial government to follow through on commitments outlined in its Throne Speech as it prepared to table the 2026 budget.

Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador said communities across the province continued to face long-standing infrastructure and funding challenges, and urged the government to back its promises with concrete investments.

Among the concerns highlighted were persistent boil water advisories, inadequate wastewater systems, and limited funding to support critical upgrades. MNL also pointed to fire departments that rely heavily on community fundraising to maintain essential services, as well as gaps in training resources for municipal staff.

The organization said rural municipalities continued to struggle with insufficient cellular service, which it described as a barrier to safety and economic development.

MNL emphasized that municipalities should be included in decision-making processes, particularly when it comes to infrastructure programs and funding models that directly impact local governments.

The group, which represents 269 municipalities and five Inuit Community Governments, said it would continue advocating for policies and investments to support sustainable communities across the province.

MNL President Amy Coady said the organization was looking to work with the provincial government on developing a fair funding model.

“We look forward to working with the Provincial Government to create an equitable funding model for municipalities to provide clean drinking water, clean oceans, and safe communities for residents across the province,” she said.
