More than $3.9 million is being invested to upgrade Nain’s sanitary sewer system and improve the reliability of wastewater services in the Labrador community.

The joint investment was announced Thursday by MP Philip Earle, provincial Minister Lela Evans and Nain Inuit Community Government AngajukKâk Anthony Andersen.

The project includes replacing damaged sanitary sewer mains and manholes, installing inflow protectors and completing surface grading.

The governments say the work will reduce the risk of sewer backups, protect the environment and nearby marine ecosystems, and provide more reliable wastewater services for existing residents.

The upgraded system will also increase wastewater capacity, which officials say will help support future population growth and housing construction in Nain.

The investment involves the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the Nain Inuit Community Government.

The project is being announced as governments continue to identify infrastructure needs tied to housing development in northern and remote communities.

The federal government says investments in wastewater and other infrastructure are intended to support housing construction and address infrastructure requirements associated with population growth.
