A 53-year-old man was rescued from Second Pond in the Goulds with assistance from a kayaker on Saturday.

Firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department along with Goulds Volunteer Fire Department responded to Second Pond in the Goulds on Saturday for a report of a person in distress in the water. The person who was in distress was reported to be approximately 300 to 400 feet from shore.

Crews from three fire stations including Goulds, Mount Pearl and Central responded to the call including a boat from Central fire station.

As crews were responding further information came in stating that the person was wearing a life jacket.

A person who lived nearby didn’t hesitate grabbing his kayak, paddle and life jacket going into the pond and helping the person who was in distress.

Firefighters also assisted when they arrived on scene using a Hamacho board to go out in the water, and tied a rope on so firefighters could drag him in to the shoreline faster.

The person was believed to be in the water for about 45 minutes before first responders could safely bring him to shore, luckily the person did not sustain any injuries and was reported to not be hypothermic.

After the person was brought to shore he was wrapped in blanks to warm until paramedics could arrive, he was then placed on a stretcher and sent to hospital.
