Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General John Haggie released the results of a public survey regarding policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Approximately 4,500 people engaged in the survey from over 240 communities. Nearly 52 percent of those respondents identified as women, over 47 percent identified as men, and one percent identified as two-spirit, transgender or non-binary. Almost two-thirds of respondents were between 35 to 64 years of age.

Among the questions from the report, respondents were asked, "what steps could the police take to improve public trust and accountability?"

Responses included accountability needed within police forces and handling of complaints are important. Transparent processes around police conduct and handling of complaints are important.

Police officers should receive ongoing training, particularly around cultural awareness, mental health, and de-escalation techniques.

Increase police visibility and involvement in community events to build better relationships.
