Gander addresses concerns over late-night fireworks

The Town of Gander says it is investigating ongoing complaints about fireworks being set off during late-night and early-morning hours in several parts of the community.

In a statement, the town said it understands residents’ concerns, noting that loud and unexpected fireworks can disrupt sleep and be particularly distressing for people with PTSD or sensory sensitivities. The noise can also frighten pets.

By-Law Enforcement is reviewing reports received by the town, including the reported times and locations of incidents. Officials are also speaking with local fireworks retailers and coordinating with the RCMP where information may assist with the investigation.

The town says its Community Standards By-law contains provisions dealing with unreasonable noise and that enforcement action will be pursued when sufficient evidence is available.

Residents are being asked to report each incident and provide as much detail as possible, including the exact time and location, the direction the fireworks were seen or heard from, descriptions of people or vehicles involved, photographs or video when safely available, and contact information for witnesses.

The town says online reports and emails can be submitted at any time, including immediately following an overnight incident.

Officials say timely and detailed reports can help identify where the fireworks are being discharged and support enforcement action.

The town says it will continue following up on reports and working with relevant partners to address the issue.
