The Canadian Armed Forces has launched a military engineering operation aimed at strengthening its ability to operate across Canada's Arctic and North, including infrastructure assessments along the Labrador coast.

Operation NANOOK-QIMAAVIVUT, which runs from July through September, is part of Operation NANOOK, Canada's annual Arctic sovereignty and security operation.

The Department of National Defence said military personnel will conduct engineering reconnaissance and infrastructure assessments near Resolute Bay, Nunavut, survey Arctic airfields, and complete site assessments along the Labrador coast. The information gathered will help identify future engineering, mobility and logistical requirements needed to support year-round military operations in remote northern regions.

The operation is designed to improve the Canadian Armed Forces' ability to move personnel and equipment, sustain operations and respond effectively in the Arctic, where long distances, limited infrastructure and harsh environmental conditions present unique challenges.

Operation NANOOK-QIMAAVIVUT is being carried out alongside other Operation NANOOK activities and in coordination with broader Arctic security initiatives, including NATO's enhanced Vigilance Activity ARCTIC SENTRY.

The Department of National Defence said the combined activities are intended to strengthen situational awareness, operational readiness and Canada's ability to support sovereignty, security and continental defence objectives across the Arctic.
