Boris Johnson resigns as leader of the Conservative party
There will soon be a new prime minister of the United Kingdom.
Boris Johnson resigned as leader of the Conservative party but will stay on as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen, a process that could take months.
Johnson was facing calls to resign after more than a third of Britain's 179 government ministers and parliamentary private secretaries resigned between July 5 and 7.
Johnson had initially vowed to stay on as leader.
On July 24, 2019, the day following Johnson's election as Conservative Party leader, Queen Elizabeth II accepted Theresa May's resignation and appointed Johnson as prime minister.
