System to impact the province this weekend


A large low remains on track to deliver a punch to Atlantic Canada this weekend.


Some areas of Newfoundland will see just rain and some areas will see rain and snow.


For Saturday night and Sunday, the west coast and the majority of central will see 5 to 15 cm of snow. Amounts could be 30 cm for parts of northern Newfoundland. 15 to 30 mm of rain is possible. Along the south coast gusts to 70 km/h are possible. Wind gusts to 90 km/h are possible.


Heavy rain and strong winds are expected Saturday night and Sunday for eastern Newfoundland. Rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm is expected. Gusts to 100 km/h are possible.


In the Wreckhouse area winds will gust from 80 km/h except 100 km/h on Saturday afternoon, and 140 km/h Saturday evening.


Snow is expected to be the dominant form of precipitation but across southeastern Labrador, snow will change to ice pellets or freezing rain and then rain. Snow will begin before dawn on Sunday. Snow will change to ice pellets or freezing rain Sunday morning and to rain by Sunday afternoon.


Across central and coastal Labrador 20 to 30 cm is expected. Winds will gust between 80 and 100 km/h.


This storm has the potential to cause significant travel disruptions across the region. Power outages are also possible.


Ahead of the storm, Marine Atlantic will depart an hour earlier this evening and warns of a potential schedule impact for Saturday and Sunday.
