A 30-year-old man is in custody following a dramatic break-in and high-speed police pursuit that unfolded early Thursday morning in Mount Pearl.
At approximately 12:35 a.m., RNC responded to a report of a break and enter in progress at the Needs Convenience store on Barbour Drive. According to police, a truck had reversed into the storefront, causing significant structural damage.
Officers flooded the area and soon spotted the suspect vehicle — a 2009 Ford F-350 — near Dunn’s Road. Police say the driver refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that was monitored closely for public safety concerns.
During the chase, the suspect allegedly attempted to collide head-on with police cruisers on two separate occasions. Officers deployed spike belts in an effort to disable the vehicle, but the suspect managed to avoid them. Police later observed that the truck was experiencing mechanical difficulties.
The pursuit came to an end near the Brazil Street apartments, where the suspect fled on foot. A short chase ensued, ending with the suspect’s arrest.
He was taken to the city lockup and is facing a slew of charges, including:
Break and enter
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Flight from police
Resisting arrest
Assaulting a police officer
Refusal to comply with a breathalyzer demand
Assault with a weapon
Operating a vehicle without insurance
Operating an unregistered vehicle
Driving without a valid license
Police confirmed the accused remains in custody pending a court appearance. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be laid.
