State of Emergency Declared in Central Newfoundland due to forest fires

The provincial government has declared a state of emergency for areas of Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishop’s Falls and the Connaigre Peninsula due to wildfires.

Minister of Justice and Public Safety John Hogan made the declaration on Saturday.

Forest fires are causing smoke and deteriorating air quality in areas of the central region. At this time this is a precautionary measure. There is no immediate fire hazard to homes or residents.

Central Health will be supporting efforts to move those who require additional care so that they are not in the immediate vicinity of the smoke.

For information on emergency lodging, please contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-222-9597.
