Rain, snow, and strong winds expected

An area of low pressure will move across Newfoundland beginning this afternoon and lasting until Tuesday evening.

The low will bring rain, snow, and strong winds to most of the Island and portions of southeastern Labrador.

The south coast could receive 30 to 60 mm of rain, the northern Avalon Peninsula including St. John's and most of central will get about 15 to 25 mm of rain and 15 to 30 mm is expected along parts of the west coast, locally some amounts could be higher. Northeastern Newfoundland will see about 10 to 20 mm of rain.

The rain combined with warm temperatures will result in snow melt which could lead to localized flooding.

It is worth noting the extreme cold warning in Labrador City and Wabush. Wind chills near -45 are expected on Tuesday morning.

For the areas in Newfoundland under a snowfall warning, snowfall amounts of up to 15 cm is possible. In Southeastern Labrador some areas could see up to 20 cm.

Winds will gust between 80 and 100 km/h this afternoon in western Newfoundland and overnight into Tuesday morning elsewhere.
