Clear and cold conditions are expected across much of Newfoundland tonight, with gusty northwest winds driving wind chill values down into the minus-20s in several regions.
In the St. John’s area and across the Avalon Peninsula, skies are expected to be clear this evening before becoming partly cloudy overnight. Northwest winds of about 30 km/h, gusting to 50, will push the temperature down to around –15 C inland, while coastal areas may remain closer to –10 C. Wind chill values are expected to reach about –26.
Similar conditions are forecast for much of eastern and central Newfoundland, including Clarenville and the Bonavista Peninsula, where clear skies will give way to some cloud overnight. Temperatures are expected to fall to between –18 C inland and about –14 C near the coast, with wind chills near –28 in some areas and a risk of frostbite.
Across the island’s interior, including the Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor regions, the night will remain mainly clear with increasing cloud after midnight. Lows are forecast near –16 C with wind chill values around –26.
Parts of central and northeastern Newfoundland could also see some flurries overnight. In the Bonavista North and Bay of Exploits areas, partly cloudy conditions are expected along with occasional flurries in onshore winds that could produce local accumulations of about two centimetres. Temperatures are expected to hold near –13 C, with wind chills around –25.
On the west coast, including Corner Brook and Bay St. George, skies will remain mainly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of flurries overnight. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly to about –11 C by morning, while wind chill values will hover near –22.
Northern parts of the island are forecast to see some of the coldest conditions. The Northern Peninsula East region is expected to drop to around –20 C overnight, with west winds gusting up to 60 km/h producing wind chills near –34 and a risk of frostbite.
Bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chill values are expected across Labrador tonight.
In Labrador City and Wabush, the night is forecast to be partly cloudy, becoming clear during the evening. Northwest winds gusting up to 40 km/h will ease near midnight as temperatures fall to about –36 C. Wind chill values are expected to reach –43 overnight, creating a risk of frostbite within minutes.
Similar conditions are forecast for the Churchill Falls and Churchill Valley areas, where partly cloudy skies will clear this evening. Northwest winds gusting to 50 km/h will become lighter late tonight, while temperatures drop to about –33 C. Wind chills are expected to fall to around –45 overnight.
In the Upper Lake Melville region, including the Eagle River area, the night will be partly cloudy with clearing near midnight. Winds shifting from northwest to west around 20 km/h will bring temperatures down to about –23 C, with wind chill values near –33 overnight and a risk of frostbite.
Along the north coast, the Nain area will see clearing skies late this evening with northwest winds gusting up to 60 km/h. Temperatures are expected to fall to about –23 C, while wind chills will reach roughly –38 overnight.
Communities along the central Labrador coast, including Hopedale, Postville and Makkovik, are expected to see partly cloudy skies with northwest winds gusting up to 50 km/h. Temperatures will fall to around –21 C with wind chills near –34 overnight.
Farther south along the coast, from Cartwright to Black Tickle and the Norman Bay to Lodge Bay region, partly cloudy skies and northwest winds gusting to 60 km/h are forecast. Temperatures are expected to dip to about –19 C with wind chill values near –32 overnight.
In southern Labrador, including the Red Bay to L’Anse-au-Clair region, a few clouds are expected overnight with west winds gusting to 50 km/h. Temperatures will fall to about –19 C, with wind chills dropping to around –31 by morning.
