What time is it? Why did clocks skip ahead overnight?

Most people in the province woke up this morning to some strange times.

Many clocks seem to have jumped ahead by several minutes. Several people took to social media all stating that the time on their microwaves, alarm clocks and more jumped ahead by a few minutes.

Newfoundland Hydro has provided an explanation of the phenomenon. Hydro says this was due to the "system balancing to match customer demand" it was during a period of high frequency that occurred overnight.
