Trudeau Announces Measures to Support Energy Sector

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced some new measures that aim to support the energy sector that has been crippled from COVID-19.

The announcement lays out $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

This move is expected to create over 5,000 jobs alone in Alberta.

Trudeau also laid out $75 million to help the offshore industry in Newfoundland and Labrador cut emissions.

Orphan wells are well sites that have been permanently taken out of production that do not have any party legally or financially responsible to deal with decommissioning and reclamation obligations.
