Public Interest Group on Cancer Research marks successful year

The Public Interest Group on Cancer Research is marking a successful year.

In 2023, the group published one scholarly manuscript and made two conference presentations. They also made two presentations to help train next generation cancer scientists from Atlantic Canada and beyond. The group also received funding for two new public engagement projects.

Members are also actively involved in research projects on cancer as patient partners and investigators.

The group also created a Facebook page and Dr. Sevtap Savas, the lead scientist started to post short video sessions on cancer on her YouTube channel.

This year the group will work on a virtual documentary screening and panel discussion event on transgender individuals and cancer and create digital stories and knowledge exchange pieces on cancer by stakeholders using a variety of tools such as podcasts.

The Public Interest Group on Cancer Research was created in 2021 and consists of 11 cancer patients and family member representatives from the province, and three scientists from Memorial University, including Dr. Sevtap Savas, Dr. Holly Etchegary, and NL Health Services Dr. Cindy Whitten.

Anyone interested in joining this group or their activities, can contact the group’s

lead, Sevtap Savas (savas@mun.ca; 709 864 6507).
