Motor vehicle and parts sector grows by 5.1 percent

Statistics Canada is reporting growth in retail sales in January.

Retail trade increased 2.5 percent.

The most growth came from the motor vehicle and parts sector which grew by 5.1 percent. In the last quarter of 2021, there was a higher volume of imports of motor vehicles which injected some much-needed inventory into dealers' lots.

Gains were also reported in building material and garden equipment and supplies and furniture and home furnishings stores.

Activity at clothing and clothing accessories stores was down in January.
