More people commute to work by car while public transit lags

The latest data from Statistics Canada shows that nationally, commuting to work by car and public transit has grown this year.

Commuting by public transit is up in eight provinces.

Only 10.1 per cent of commuters (1.6 million people) travelled to work via public transit nationally.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, 87.0 per cent of people travel to work by car. Public transit is not as viable in this province as in other provinces.

More commuters are travelling to work in May 2023 compared with pre-pandemic May 2016 levels. More people have also returned to work compared to the pandemic years.
