FFAW calls for halt to experimental oil burning

The FFAW is calling for an immediate halt to plans for two experiments that would spill oil and chemical dispersants into the ocean over what the union says are "important fishing grounds."

FFAW submitted official opposition to the project on January 20. The Inshore Council voiced further objection to the proposed experiments.

This test will be conducted by the Multi-Partner Research Initiative. The Multi-Partner Research Initiative says it advances oil spill research and enhances Canada’s level of preparedness and capability to respond to marine oil pollution, advances scientific knowledge and science-based decision making in oil spill response operations, and improves our knowledge of current and emerging oil spill response and remediation strategies.

Fish harvesters reject the idea that these tests cannot be conducted in a lab environment.
