Several Bear Sightings in Labrador City and Wabush

August 11, 2019

There have been several bear sightings in both Labrador City and Wabush over the last day or so.

Conservation Officers have three live traps set and they have staff scheduled for extra patrols in the evenings.

If there are any bear sightings please call the 24 hour Conservation Officer standby phone at: 709-280-3747 or the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary at 709-944-7602.

If a bear approaches you:

  • Stay calm.

  • Give the bear space and an escape route.

  • Speak calmly and firmly, avoid eye contact, and back away slowly

  • Never run or try to climb a tree. Bears can do both of these things better than you!

  • If the bear begins to follow you, drop something (not food) to distract it.

  • Be cautious around females with cubs.

  • If the bear attacks you, fight back and make a lot of noise. Do not "play dead."
