Fluorspar Mine Reopens in St. Lawrence

August 6, 2017

Local residents along with Premier Dwight Ball welcomed the reopening of the fluorspar mine by Fluorspar Canada, in St. Lawrence.

Since 2016, work to develop the mine for its reopening helped create close to 1,000 person years of employment during the construction phase.

Canada Fluorspar projects that 3,000 person years of employment in mining and milling will be created in the first 12 years of the mine’s operations. Another 525 spinoff jobs are anticipated to be created as a result of the mine reopening.

In March, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation announced a $17 million repayable loan to Canada Fluorspar Inc. to assist with the re-activation of the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The investment reflects government’s commitments to collaborating with business and supporting job growth.

Today, more than 5,000 people are employed in the mining industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, particularly in rural communities, and almost $3 billion in mineral shipments are forecast.

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF₂. It belongs to the halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon.
