It will be a snow-day for much of the Island today.
A deep area of low pressure will pass just west of the Avalon Peninsula today.
It is bringing snow to the south coast, central, and western Newfoundland, including the Northern Peninsula. The heaviest snow is expected in central where 30 cm is possible.
On the Avalon, precipitation begins as snow then changes to ice pellets then to freezing rain and eventually to rain.
Winds are expected to be strong across the Island. The Avalon will see the strongest winds with gusts up to 130 km/h possible this afternoon. Winds will also be near 100 km/h in central.
We may also see higher than normal water levels along the coast.
There are several alerts in effect for most of the province.
Conditions will begin to improve on tonight. However, gusty winds will continue through Sunday with some onshore snow.
