Winter Storm Sets Sights on Western Newfoundland & Parts of Labrador #nlwx

Newfoundland and Labrador is about to get hit with a large storm.

On the Avalon and parts of the south coast, only rain and strong winds are expected. St. John's will pick up about 30 mm of rain today. Winds will pick up tonight with potential gusts to 110 km/h.

In central Newfoundland, we will see both rain and snow. Gander will see 5 to 15 cm of snow and 5 to 10 mm of rain. Tonight there could be wind gusts to 100 km/h.

In Western Newfoundland, the snow has already started and schools have closed ahead of the storm. Corner Brook will see snowfall amounts ranging from 20 to 35 cm, St. Anthony could see 30 to 35 cm and Port aux Basques will only see about 10 cm. Winds will pick up along the west coast tonight gusting from 90 to 110 km/h. Snow will continue overnight and Wednesday along the west coast.

Labrador will see heavy snow for southeastern sections with up to 50 cm possible.

Winds will ease for all areas tomorrow. There could be power outages overnight.

This morning there are wet roads on the Avalon, Burin, parts of central and the southwest coast. On the west coast, there are some snow-covered and slippery sections. Roads in Labrador are snow-covered with icy sections. There is fair visibility.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled all crossings for today and warns that crossings scheduled for tomorrow could be impacted as well.
