Twitter labels CBC as Government-funded Media

Twitter has added a label to CBC's main Twitter account. The label reads "Government-funded Media".

Government-funded media is defined by Twitter as "outlets where the government provides some or all of the outlet’s funding and may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content."

CBC/Radio-Canada is publicly funded but there is no government involvement in the editorial process. Its independence is protected by the Broadcasting Act.

The Broadcasting Act states in part that CBC "shall, in the pursuit of its objects and in the exercise of its powers, enjoy freedom of expression and journalistic, creative and programming independence."
